We have forgotten the language of grief / Poem by Abdurrashid Abdurrahman

We have forgotten the language of grief

A long journey of virtual nothingness. We are not

  a stream of engaging water,

as a hiker in the hottest

savannah, a sparrow searches for a river. A language

of non-alphabetical letters, concentrating

   on every subject

of life's movement, between topics

  of every class, like a

duty master on his duty. We live and

forget the compulsory

questions on our papers, skipping them like dawn trying to outlive

the dark. But our lives are measured by wings of a bird.
