Whispers of life / Poem by Jesse Emmanuella

 WHISPERS OF LIFE

 It whispered to her ears
With red eyes awaking her fears
A demon of silent whispers
Speaking to her only in dreams. In nightmares
Sending duplicates of excruciating feelings
Into the holes on her heart.

She melts every night in tears to examine the ticking clock
Tick-tock tick-tock. Tick-tock tick-tock. Life sits uneasy.
If she could discuss with life,
                                The matters of betrayal
Like how Brutus stabbed Caesar and made Rome weep
With wails for a king, a brother, a lover,
A fallen hero.

If she could discuss with Brutus,
                                      The matters of trust
Like how gods work hard by breaking off the clouds
To spill out water on sunkissed rocks, soil, earth.
Yet green plants slump to death trusting the barren rocks
For more moisture.

If for once, she could speak to Romeo on the matters of love
And to Juliet, on the matters of enmity between families.
                                  How oya and osun splashed
Giving poison to the liver.

If she could find her quiver filled with arrows
Striking the heart
Like a dart
Eliminating the demon
Of pain, of love, of betrayal
And whispers like Caesar...
'et brute?'
