THE MELANCHOLY OF THE VERNAL EQUINOX / poem by E.C. Traganas

THE MELANCHOLY OF THE VERNAL EQUINOX

The melancholy of the vernal equinox
spreading across the sky in shades of Vermeer blue
where, in northern latitudes,
the setting sun like broken capillaries
bleeds away all sense of joy
and plunges one in drugged consent
to dream away the stream of time between
one’s youth and age.

Outside, a firecracker bursts,
a solitary wall where children play;
like seeds of mandragora plant,
one’s eyes awaken briefly,
weeping in a mist to see you seated
zealous at your desk,
the other side of dreaming,
while we, held captive by our doubts,
reflect again.
